Figure Drawing
The following videos are used to prepare students to do the comic cover project . This is a lengthy process involving many grades and drawings in the student's interactive journal. There are many options for drawing instructional videos, but I prefer Jazza for beginners as I believe he is easier to follow and the work is not usually overly complex.
In preparation of drawing complete figures, we focus on body parts in the figure. There are other better videos for this, but most of them are lengthy. As a beginner this video touches the things that we need to know, and will serve us just fine. Students work will be completed in the interactive journal with lots of pausing for drawing time and steps. Copies of the base hand structure will be traced into the journal before we begin.
Interactive Journal Example
Here is the finished Hand page in the interactive journal. Be sure you label your page and give it a page number. Update your table of contents daily!
As above, there are probably better videos for feet, but this one will serve beginners well. Students work will be completed in their interactive journal with lots of pausing for drawing time and steps. As above we will copy the base foot structure into the journal before we begin.
Interactive Journal Example
Here is the finished Feet page in the interactive journal. Be sure you label your page and give it a page number. Update your table of contents daily!
This video breaks the anatomy of the male arm into muscle groups. As in the previous videos we will begin by tracing the three arm positions in the beginning photo in the student interactive journal.
Interactive Journal Example
Here is the finished arm page in the interactive journal. Be sure you label your page and give it a page number. Update your table of contents daily! There should be more labels on muscles.
This video breaks the anatomy of the male leg into muscle groups. As in the previous videos we will begin by tracing the three leg positions in the beginning photo in the student interactive journal.

Female Face
This is a newer video, the video I use to use was full of commercials and the guys was always off subject. At any rate, in class I will give you pictograph instructions and walk you step by step through drawing the face. It would be nice to have a profile view and a 3/4, but for time sake we will stick with the front view. There are other videos available if you are interested in the other viewpoints.
Step 1 This actually shows the set up after proper spacing using parallelograms for eyes. The lips should still be an oval at this point though!
Step 1.5 Round the eyes off at the corners on the top inside of the eye and the bottom outside of the eye.
Step 1.75 Draw the pupil, eyelashes and eyelid.
Step 2 Draw the nose, lips and eyebrows. Typically done on day 2. Sometimes we need to play catch up in some classes.
Step 3- Add ears, neck, hair and shade (add value). I cannot add value using a white board, see the next images for help with places to add value.
This is from the older video that I use to use. It uses the same steps.
Example from my personal journal of female face with value added.

MALE FIGURE TEMPLATE
This form will be used to do the male figure drawing. It is broken down into 8 inches. The head should be the shape of an egg about a half an inch wide in inch number 1. Inch 2 will be subdivided into three equal sections. The top section of inch 2 will be the collar bone. The rib cage will be drawn in the rest of inch 2 and to the bottom of inch 3. The inside of the rib cage is an upside down 'V' about the width of the dividing line at the third inch. The inside of the rib cage should stop at the top of inch 3. Inch 4 will contain the pelvis which will be represented by an upside down triangle. The femur bone starts on the side of the pelvis toward the bottom and extends out toward the right and left before descending down toward the knees. The knees will be represented by an oval placed on the bottom line of inch 6. The feet will be represented by triangles sitting on the bottom line of inch 8. The bones of the leg run from the middle of the knee to the middle of the triangle of the foot.
Juvenile Figure Template
6 Head tall template for younger teenagers. We will not use this in class, but if you want to make a younger looking person this template will change the scale of the head proportion to the rest of the body making the person look younger.
We draw the female body first. I use to use this video, and it still contains a lot of useful information. However, due to excessive commercials from the artist doing the video. I been drawing with students daily to achieve the same results, but I still use most of the principles of this video. If a student is absent this video would work in lieu of my personal instruction.
Step 1 Draw and ink the skeleton so you can see it through the paper.
Step 2 Fold the paper and draw the mannequin right on top of the skeleton using the skeleton as a guide. Ink the Mannequin.
Step 3 Get a new piece of paper and place it over the top of your mannequin. Clothe the mannequin and smooth the muscles and joints. Add a face and hair. On the opposite side of the page draw the figure in a new pose. The skeleton, Mannequin, clothed figure and new pose are each 25% of the Test grade for this project.
Final Page Example
This is the last two figures that we create when doing the full female figure. You must have two pages to turn in. One page has the female skeleton and mannequin. The second page is the one pictured which has the female figure clothed hands at the side and a pose of your own creation for the same character. We typically draw a cheerleader do to the fact that it displays the figure well. The first unfinished sketch shows the skeleton that I started with.
Full Male figure
This is the original video for the male figure drawing. I do not use it in class anymore. I draw with students each day. However, if you missed a day or more then you may need to use this video. One of the reasons I stopped using these videos is due to the amount of advertising in them, and the instructor goes off on tangents, but they will work if you missed some class time.
Step 1 We will combine the skeleton and mannequin phase.
Step 2 Ink just the mannequin, not the skeleton.
Step 3 We will fold the paper over and draw the muscles of the male figure on top of the mannequin from step 2. You see here the page unfolded.
Here are 3 more examples of the male figure, note the different heads and hairstyles. You are welcome to make a hair style or face that I do not make with your class. Be creative!
The Last Page
On a new page you will draw a male figure in a pose and with clothes. It can be any genre. Here are 6 examples done by me. Mannequin/Muscle Man and Pose are 33% each of the test grade for this assignment.
