Emotions Video by Jazza
This is our first instructional video, and for this video I have plastic "head" templates for students to trace before we begin. The video is broken into 3 days of instruction with two emotions (4 heads) being done each day. All work will be done in the students interactive journal and graded from the journal. Each day represents a daily grade and the final product including the last days 'tweaking' will be graded as a test grade.
Day 1, Content
This was done sideways in the journal only because it was on another piece of paper. I suggest you follow the format of day 2, because it works just as well if not better. Content is the emotion that you have when its a good day, but nothing is really going on. Please be sure to label the page 'Emotions: Content'. Also update your Interactive Journal's Table of Contents.
Day 1, Happy
This is the emotion you feel when you hear a good joke or see something that makes you smile. These images include the tweaks from the final day such as lines in the forehead. The head on the left represents a cartoon style head. The head on the right represents a Western style or American Comic book.
Day 2, Angry
I find that the Angry expression relies heavily on the eyebrows. Make the eyebrows go down toward the nose and curl up on the inside. Watch the shape of the mouth, you do not want a smile!
Day 2, Sad
Sad also gets a lot from the eyes, but in this case its the shape of both eyes and eyebrows. Note that the eyebrows are high in the center and low on the outsides of the face.
Day 3, Seriously?
The mouth and the eyebrows start low on the left side and go high on the right. It helps if the eyes are squinting a bit and if your pupils are covered at the top by the eyelid.
Day 3, Cunning
This is your evil mastermind look, it is a mix of happy and angry. The eyebrows are shaped like angry and the mouth is shaped like happy.

This guide shows all of the emotions for both head styles complete with final adjustments to the foreheads and facial shape. Day 3 will end with these final adjustments which are part of the test grade.
The left hand page of your Interactive Journal must have your own character expressing the emotion asked for when you arrive to class. Typically two are drawn a day for the two emotions worked on that day. You may choose either style head or you may make your own style head so long as it expresses the emotion using the guidelines given in the lesson. Anthropomorphic and Personification style characters are more than welcome. I have had talking Pizza, unhappy sunflowers, angry cats and many more characters drawn and all are welcome on the left hand side of the page.
